Established in 1895, SUHSD operates four comprehensive high schools—Sequoia, Woodside, Carlmont, and Menlo-Atherton— a STEAM-focused school (TIDE Academy), dependent charter school (East Palo Alto Academy), continuation high school (Redwood), Middle College (in collaboration with Cañada College) and other specialized programs and services. The district is also the sponsoring agency for two independent charter high schools (Summit and Everest). The District's Adult School based in Redwood City serves 2000 students annually.

As expressed in its 2024-27 Strategic Plan, the District is committed to nurturing the interests, passions, academic growth and social-emotional development of its students, and fostering a physically safe and emotionally welcoming environment that values diverse voices, lived experiences and perspectives.

SUHSD offers a wide range of academic programs, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses, International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, dual college enrollment, and career technical education (CTE) pathways, all aimed at preparing students for college, career, and life beyond high school. The district emphasizes student well-being, offering robust counseling services, mental health resources, and extracurricular activities ranging from athletics to arts.

SUHSD continuously works to close opportunity gaps among its students, who come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. SUHSD is widely regarded as a leading district in the Bay Area for its innovative approaches to education and community engagement.
