Modified graduation eligibility

Modified graduation eligibility

Due to significant educational disruptions and challenges experienced by some students in transition, the Education Code requires districts to exempt from any district-adopted graduation requirements (e.g., additional course completion, service learning requirements, or the requirement of a grade above a D, etc.) a foster youth, homeless student, former juvenile court school student, child of a military family, or migrant student who transfers into the district or between district high schools any time after completing their second year of high school, or a “newcomer pupil” who is in the third or fourth year of high school (collectively, “students in transition”), unless the district makes a finding that the student is reasonably able to complete the requirements in time to graduate by the end of their fourth year of high school.

Specifically, the following students may be exempted from SUHSD graduation requirements pursuant to the referenced legislation, which is codified in Education Code Section 51225.1:
  • Students in foster care (AB 167/216)
  • Students who are experiencing homelessness (AB 1806)
  • Students formerly enrolled in juvenile court school (AB 2306)
  • Students of active duty military parents/guardians (AB 365)
  • Currently migratory and “newcomer pupils” (AB 2121)
